Bought this for $11 which was listed as "Roosevelt Copper Dime". Color looked right for a missing clad issue but seller said weight was normal and there is no strike weakness. Looking at previous topics I believe this is an annealment error. Copper has seeped through the clad layer which is why you can still see some clad spots. Not in hand yet but curious about CCF thoughts and opinions.

Can we see the rim? I agree that this looks like a possible candidate. I recently did quite a bit of investigating about annealing errors (which had always confused me a lot) because I was trying to verify one I had found coin roll hunting. One thing I learned is that bright copper on the rim is one of the best pieces of supporting evidence for an annealing error rather than environmental toning.

On the reverse you can start to see the coating over the clad peel. Note the area on 'UR' on Pluribus. Looks like a metal detector find. The color should be red, not brown. There should be no peeling of coating on a missing clad. The coating is tell us, it is not a missing clad.

Coop, this is from Error-Ref.com on annealing errors. This is not a missing clad issue. Quote: Copper, red, black, brown, and gray are colors typically found in these errors. Coverage can be complete or incomplete. The copper can range from a slight tinge to a thick coating. http://www.error-ref.com/?s=Improperly+annealed.

But annealing doesn't peel off in flakes like your coin is showing.

Coop I'm not seeing flaking on the coin but flaking is possible with annealing errors as seen here from error-ref.com. I see copper which has migrated around the clad layer, but not complete in some areas.

CoinHI, in my opinion, your dime has environmental damage or discolouration from a chemical reaction, and is not an improperly annealed planchet, sorry. You stated it's "weight was normal and there is no strike weakness" which is normal for an environmentally damaged coin (and abnormal for an improperly annealed coin). I am certain you will not take my opinion on this damage as the final word (nor should you), so I'd recommend you first taking it to a local coin shop for their opinion if trustworthy, or send it in to PCGS for their professional opinion and grading. We see a great deal of these here on CCF, and everyone thinks theirs is an improperly annealed coin, but a true error coin is pretty rare. Coop knows about these (see his posts above). Perhaps Mike Diamond would weigh in with his opinion as well. Either way, best of luck to you! Bonne chance!

A big difference between the first and follow up pics! images taken with different light exposure.
As stated already, it is an environmentally damaged coin, most likely a buried coin at one time.

Hm, I'm still not sure, but definitely leaning ED after seeing the rim since it looks a little dark/toned. You might want to add new pictures, since the lighting doesn't seem to be capturing the color very well in the most recent ones. A better lit shot of the rim could also help.

On the 5th picture, showing the reverse, am I seeing flaking from 10-3 o'clock?
I'm leaving toward ED as well.
