I couldn't find anything where the US mint had made a gold or gold-plated dime for this year... So this just something that someone did more than likely to try to scam someone into thinking it's an actual gold dime, is this actually something that the mint made?

Absolutely nothing that the mint would have made for that year and denomination. Looks like someone possibly plated it.

Looks like natural toning. Being a 1985-D it has a great strike. I would 2x2 it.

Definitely not natural toning... I'm sure it's a gold plating of some kind...

I think it is post-mint plating too. Fun find!

Not always a scam trying to fool someone into thinking the coin itself is solid gold. Gold/brass/chrome/silver/platinum plated coins have been sold over the years just as novelty items (you may interpret this as a scam since it adds no value).

Do the acid test to find out if it is gold plated. My bet it was soaked in a zinc salution. The zinc then coats the copper and then heated. The copper atoms and zinc atoms mix turning the coin gold. This mixer is called yellow brass. Science teachers usually do this for there class. Hope that helps, and it's still a neat find.

You can tell it's been plated as the high spot on Roosevelt's bust shows the clad where the plating is wearing off.
