It is difficult to believe that these old "silver dollars" were once legal tender in USA until 1857, and were kind of the original silver dollar in USA. The scroll around the pole (on the Spanish coat of arms) really resembles the dollar sign! I wanted to get a straight grading specimen that didn't cost thousands of dollars. I would not mind upgrading eventually, but I am curious what you guys think of this coin. I have seen a really big variety of details present in all grades on these (in both NGC and PCGS).

The holder has obscured the outside of the rims which makes it a bit harder to grade. But my guess is 55.

Picture out of focus and under plastic, unfortunately. This means you will only get guesstimates of the grade. The TPGrader had the advantage of examining this coin, hand held, under 10X magnification, in ideal lighting conditions. We don't. Some may prefer Sheldon, but this system was only really intended for the grading of U.S. coins. I am not surprised that you have seen a big variety of details present in all grades of Pillar Dollars. That is one of the reasons why (I think) Sheldon grading system is not suited to grading this coin Weaker strike and wear on the pillars, globes and crown. Wear on both sides consistent with Nearly VF - no details (British grading). Pleasing coin to have in most collections.

Thanks for your opinions! This coin is really hard to photograph through this slab. I would upgrade it for a straight grading AU example if it becomes feasible in the future, but for now this one is ok for me!

It would seem that (at least for this coin), nVF (British grading), and XF-40 (Sheldon), maybe near equivalent.

Nice coin that looks properly graded.

Thanks so much for your feedback! Until I get the chance to (affordably) upgrade to an AU one, this pillar dollar will represent its type proudly in my collection!

No shame in having this one, it's a beauty.

There is a full grade differential between UK and USA, but I agree with sel_69, nVF or even high Fine as the world is nearly flat and details are muddy.
I think XF40 is too high as well - I think American wise VF25 - 30 seems more apt. Still a nice and old coin though.

In U.S. standards what is also looked at is the quality of the strike. Many times softly struck areas are taken as wear but are actually not fully struck. I'm sure the TPG saw the boldness of the rim and obverse letter/date, and quality of the surface which still has some original luster.

The coin suffers from a weak strike (esp. lion/castle side), a good amount of die rust (VERY common on the late 1740s-early 1750s Mo pieces), and is perhaps more "crusty" than some would prefer...
And also, I think the "blur" visible on the shield side is not the photo so much as a bit of doubling.
All that said, XF (or close) is probably a reasonable technical grade for wear.
Not a terrible coin at all.
