Happy Independence Day!!!

This has characteristics of a struck through as well so I'm open to opinions. Has a very nice look under the loupe.

I've added a couple more photos of an area I overlooked initially.

@CoinH. Funny coin.

I will repost here your photo with my marks. I will nor pronounce exact because I do not have the coin in my hand, just by photo.

The red lines on photos are the limits of. I see thousands of crack plates and de-lams each year, this it is the first one with borders so strait and go direct very deep.
The Red circle on the rim look like cracking plate.
The Green circle seem to be structure crack of the alloy
Yellow-Green line to strait and deep for a de-lam.

On the deep of the missing parts we can see clear the material structure and crystallization.
Also on the sides of missing's parts we can see material dispatch from strike.

Due to all those facts I wrote: could be a planchet failure (by the photos see) and will be the first see like this. Do not put this observation in cement because I do not have the coin in my Lab.

That flake of metal by the T in CENT has me thinking planchet defect as well. It is an interesting one!

Thank you for the comments.

The area by "T" had me leaning more towards a delamination while the perfectly straight lines had me thinking struck through.

Also, the normal looking area between "ONE" & "CENT" unaffected by the error, makes me lean struck through.

Well, to add my Two Cents worth this 56-D looks to grade about a mid-VF. So if this coin circulated for a while, it is a tad curious why nobody else noticed this bizzare error in their pockets. I like what silviosi has said so far. I'm kinda curious what coop or Mike Diamond would say to this one

mrwhatisit perhaps the coin was hold up in a jar of pennies for 60+ years? You just never know what you'll find next or the story behind them!

Thanks merclover, that is also a good possibility as well; the stories behind some of these coins can be just as interesting as the folk who spent them.

How much does it weigh? I say struck through debris in addition to lamination issues. Seems like the cracking planchet term could be used here.

If the weight is less than 3.11 grams then it is probably a lamination issue. If the opposite side is affected, and the weight is normal, then it could be a damaged coin. I just can't tell for sure from the images provided. I'll check on my computer when I get home.

Weight is 3.02 grams, Indicating a delamination.

Great coin. Looks like a straightforward lamination, albeit a quite deep one.

As someone with trypophobia, I hate this coin.

As a collector, I love this coin. Very cool!

Thanks CCF, when I think of Delaminations I think of a peeling effect whereas this seems to have come apart in chunks.. strange.
