I inherited a large group of this particular date/mint all BU. Trying to decide a course of action. Grade or not grade, keep, sell? A little boring to have over 100 of the same coin.

This example is pretty indicative of the group.

What say you?

Thanks for your time

I'll go with MS63, possibly MS64, too much noise on the obverse to go any higher for me. I think if you could get some to grade MS64 or higher it would be worth having them slabbed.

edit: If you're collecting or stacking, keep them for sure. If that bores you, go through and keep the 10 best (slab them) and sell the rest. It's what I would do, lol

MS63. Are they all the same die pair ( VAM)? There are some really interesting VAMs for this date/mm. http://www.vamworld.com/wiki/1888-O_VAMs

I'm not sure if they are all from the same die pair. I am guessing they were all part of the same roll/batch. I inherited them from a great Aunt who was a long time bank teller and collector of Morgans.

I went down the VAM rabbit hole four years ago when I inherited them. I didn't find any of the really cool ones back then, but I sort of ran out of steam

She had a nice collection with some of the more interesting dates and coins, but also a few dates/mm like this with many examples and all BU. I Figure someone else might get some enjoyment out of them.

Strong MS63 for me. Wish I had a great aunt who was a long-time bank teller, and had an interest in coins.

Are you hurting for money? If your answer is No, then I'd hang onto them as long as possible. Spend a day and split into piles (bad vs good) first round 50 and 50, second round 25 and 25, third round 13 and 12, forth round 6 and 6. Then post up those 6 (In separate posts) and ask the experts for grade. Then if one comes in around MS-65 have it graded as a keep shake of your Great Aunt...and silver stack the rest or sell (up to you)

Not hungry for money.. at all. However, is a shoe box full of ungraded MS-61-63s and the occasional 64/65 the way to go?

What about a bulk grading scenario? Is it a case of "you get what you pay for"?

I have a slew of American Eagles and other bullion stackers. Just not sure about the value of keeping a bunch of ungraded, mid level MS Morgans.

I also have a good group of circulated, common date Morgans, maybe 100 or so, that are definitely for stacking. I will hold onto those. I will also hold onto the rare dates that are part of her collection. She had almost finished the four "blue books" of old... anybody have a 1893-s they are tired of? One of the 5 holes to fill.

Thanks for all your input!

average to weak strikes are normal for this year. this one is more towards the average strike. based on these photos I'm not seeing any breaks in luster. although there are some small scuffs and abrasions on the obverse these appear to be from coin contact with others. the reverse does have a small scratch across the breast but not enough to make a difference in grade or details designation. it would have to make MS65 to be worth sending in. I have it at MS63 with a shot at MS64

Coin photos are like looking through a microscope. My guess is this coin looks far better in hand. I think this one is an MS-64. Nice and original and frosty, the way people want them.
If I were you, I would hold all of these for a couple more years and not sell any of them. These are better than money in the bank.
