I'm very new to coin collecting, as a matter if fact, less than a few weeks lol. I found a 1942 Mercury dime at work and ever since have been combing through Amy coins I cam find lol. Anyways on my endeavors, I've co.e across a few variations and different things. The most obvious error I have found has been this quarter. It looks as though it has multiple... hair pieces maybe? Struck in a large amount, All over the front and back of the coin. The eagle has at least 4-5 partial "ribbons" (wings, claws, etc) . Then above the head he has whaT looks like to be a torch, similar to that aBove the dimes reverse side. I originally thought it was all damage, but the imprints are too prefect and consistent to be just regular wear IMO. Can anyone tell me what I've got here and if it could be worth anything? I'm pretty sure if nothing else, it's one of a kind with all the markings. https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...0_162808.jpgimg]uploaded/Mzeek17/20210711_20210710_162919-ccfopt.jpg[/img https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...0-ccfopt.jpghttps://www.coincommunity.com/forum...9-ccfopt.jpgEdited by Mzeek17 07/11/2021 6:13 pm

@mze, first welcome to CCF. Second, your quarter dated 1987 is has normal circulation wear plus multiple large gauges. None of these are mint errors. This one is only worth face value.

Unfortunately, in this case it's just a heavily damaged quarter. Glad you caught the coin bug, though, and keep looking. A wild Mercury dime is a nice find these days.

You all can see the "ribbon" off to the right in the first picture correct? I can't find a decent pic with me to show, but all the "heavy gashes" are all that same design, whether just half of it, or parts of it. I thought damage too, but how would there be the same type of damage, same shape, multiple places, but a perfect damage mark? Lol. At the right angle you can see it, it's just hard to capture that light with a photo unfortunately
It's a bit like the Roger rabbit coin, in front of the mouth as well, the two ending parts of the ribbon look like rabbit teeth.
I know I'm new to this, but if not an error from a repeated "symbol/image,strike, what causes damage like this to a coin consistently enough to make deep patterns like this? Ath

Lucky you found that 42 Mercury dime, but like all other said just damages. If Roger rabbit did that, it is definitely post mint damage.

although it make take the shape of a ribbon, it is clearly a damaged coin. It didn't leave the mint like that.
