Picked up this Peace dollar recently-very attractive (to me) in appearance. The dealer is one that I trust. He had a whole roll of these Peace dollars with toning on them but made no claim regarding toning status. Would appreciate any opinions as to whether the toning is artificial or not. I love the coin either way, but I'm just curious as what people think! Thanks! *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

a whole roll normally wouldn't tone like that on both sides. Usually just the enders.. Unless it was a roll he put together from broken up sets?

It does not look natural to me, and personally, even if it was natural, that toning doesn't appeal to me, and I generally do like toned Morgan and Peace dollars .......... but not this one. Sorry for the harsh opinion, but you did ask what people think, and that's what I thunk.

I'm assuming this Peace dollar and its toning looks better in hand, since you like it so much, but she doesn't photograph well, in my opinion. I agree that it doesn't have good eye appeal in the photos, and that the toning isn't natural.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. or to put it another way, Some will like the toning on this coin, some won't.
Having said that, I am always suspicious that nice rainbow toning (which is very delicate and unstable anyway), can be artificial or natural. Because of this I prefer blast white, which is the way it would have appeared just after leaving the coining press.

I'd say AT as well, not a fan of this one, but if you appreciate it, that's all that matters. To each their own.

I should clarify: I'm not asking if you like it, only if you think the toning is artificial. I couldn't care less if anyone likes it or not, rude frog- de gustibus non est disputandum.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I figured it was AT, but just wanted to confirm with those of you with more experience!

I have been looking for a couple of years to upgrade my MS63 Peace dollar with a nice toner. It is difficult to find a nice toner with eye appeal for a fair price. Many of the Peace dollars get a toned blotchy look like the PCGS example below. On the OP example it appears someone tried to copy the toning look of the PCGS example by using heat.

I am not a fan of toned coins. But it is very obvious to me that there are a lot of people that like them.

A few years ago when I was doing my Peace dollar set, the LCS got a few of these (which in my opinion are pretty ). They were toned like yours, on the reverse they had a much darker toning around the rim. The seller put the coins in the oven with a little sulfur. Due to the artificial toning, they ended up only being worth melt. The LCS tried dipping them as they were common MS coins, but the dipping wouldn't remove all the toning. Its just not my thing, but if you like it, then that's great.
