I know that some (probably many) classic coins are gradually increasing in price. But are modern Proof coins increasing in price ? Or are they only gradually falling in price? Edited by Slerk 07/17/2021 4:04 pm

Falling currently. They will gain their value later as did the 50's sets if they are unopened. Too many sets being opened for hole fillers each year will lead to an increase in the value of the unopened ones.

I don't expect modern proof prices to increase much because the mintages are so much higher than, say, early 50s proofs.

Oldfordman should explain that I am not talking in particular about Mint sets ,but about individual coins sold by TPG.

Wholesale on the older proofs are firming a little and even increasing in some cases.
This applies principally to the proof rolls but there are bid offers on sets again for the first time in some time. It should be noted that roll prices might be increasing largely because so many coins fresh out of the sets have problems and can not be sold wholesale as singles.
I'd say at the very least that prices have stopped dropping. On some of these there was little lower to go because they are so close to face value.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

What I've noticed is that slabbed coins are increasing in price across the board. My local coin shop just got in a large collection of slabbed silver quarters that they paid little more than melt. I picked one up early 2021 for $12, I was there 3 weeks ago all are on ebay at $29, the current average sell price, I believe 50% have already sold.

I have heard that modern proof coins do not increase in value, but only fall. Does it make sense to collect such coins and not lose money in the future ?

I think that coins for circulation are valued by collectors more than PF (I'm talking about modern coins, of course).

What makes sense in a case like that is to not buy right away and wait for the prices to fall before buying. Many collectors do that. (Which may be why mintages for proof sets have fallen so much) Then the people who lose are those that just have to have the latest issues RIGHT NOW!. At some point though the mintages of the proof sets will reach the actual level of collectors. When that happens the prices WON'T drop in the aftermarket even after several years.

Previously, I did not understand why collectors buy proof coins. I considered them not quite a collectible item, since these coins were never in circulation and they were minted specifically for collectors. And as we all know, if something is done for collectors or has the inscription "limited edition" never increases in price and collectors do not need such things.

I don't really collect modern coins thinking I'll get rich. I have no intention of ever selling them, God willing. The only modern coins I collect are SBA dollars, Eisenhower dollars, Kennedy half dollars, and Jefferson nickels. I am really more of a silver bullion collector. Anyways, I only buy the silver proof sets - not sure why, since they are so pricey. For my collections, I buy the proof versions from people who cut them out of the proof sets. Someday, when I'm gone, hopefully not too soon, you'll probably be able to buy the whole collection from my son - maybe at face value.
