Looks like extreme die wear ( DDD) but on the devices thinned, maybe the outer part of the die was polished off? Leaving just to the lowest areas of the die intact on Liberty? (Just the opposite of a Grease Filled Die issue)

Coop asked me to contribute to this thread. This coin has a very interesting look to it. It all stems from die wear. The parts of the letters closer to the center of the coin show standard die wear, where the letters have expanded. The parts of the letters closer to the design rim overlap a " Ridge Ring". Here we have "design devouring die wear". The field portion of the die retreated to the level of the deepest letter recesses, where the letter is narrowest. I think it would make a good topic for a Coin World column, if you would consent to send the coin to me.

That *would* make for an interesting article, but it was nice to get the cliff notes version here first. Thx @mike for the analysis and @bog for posting this coin!

Nice breakdown of the issue--not to mention the 'breakdown' of the die. Good stuff.

Thank you for the very thorough explanations, I really appreciate it. I'd be happy to send you the coin, Mike. I haven't used the private message system on this site yet, but just send me the address and I'll mail it out on Monday. Here's the pictures of 'In God We Trust' - you can definitely see the design devouring die wear on the 'T' and 'R' (and somewhat on the 'U') in Trust.

interesting one, I've looked at lots of nickels over the years, and I can't recall seeing one quite like that before

I've just completed my write-up on Bogiesmoke's nickel. It will appear in the online edition of Coin World this coming Saturday.

Interesting, I was going to say this was due to "shrunken device head voodoo" but "design devouring die wear" makes more sense :)
