I recently picked up a key date coin from a reputable online dealer, but it is too small in diameter to fit into its space in a Whitman folder. Also, it weighs only 3 grams(even). Is it damaged?

Smaller than normal raises a red flag. Possibly an acid dipped coin issue, making it a damaged coin. If the rim is taller, then it could be a Dryer Coin, again a damaged coin issue. Either turns it to just a face value coin unless it's a silver coin, then worth silver melt.

Thanks, Coop. Great advise for the future. I thought about returning it, and I'm sure the seller would honor that. But it wasn't expensive, and I'll more than likely keep it as an extra at this point.

coop covered some of the possibilities but without pictures, it is hard to say what it is. A clear photo of both sides of the coin would help. The weight of 3g is within spec.

Perhaps the Whitman folder hole is too large.

@ JimmyD, No photos tis time, sorry. I'm not interested in putting the dealer on the spot. @ Tunnioc, LOL I thought of that. Let me rephrase. It's too small for ANY space in the folder.

How could you put a dealer on the spot? Especially if we don't know who or where they are?

Not asking to put the dealer on the spot, you don't have to name him. Just wanted to see pictures to see if someone here could see what the problem was. You asked a question and then won't help to seek the answer.

Right, just show us pics and give us the weight.

I've come across many 'gently used' Whitman Lincoln Cent folders which have slightly large holes--usually not an issue for fresh, mint-state cents, but older well-worn coins don't stay seated.

We are a very visual crowd. Without photos, it doesn't exist.

Would love to see a photo or two. FWIW, I have a LWC — 1945, not a key date — that appears to be similar to your coin: no visible damage, but too small for a Whitman slot. See it here, along with a normal-sized 1944-S and a Roosevelt dime, just for reference.
