New member here. I've read many forums over the years from this site as a guest but only recently decided to join. The reason for this is because I recently acquired a small haul of coins from a close friend that had passed. Anyways to get to the point after looking at all the coins, I found this gem that I know to be rare. Its an 1888 50 cent NFLD coin in not too bad of shape considering the condition of the other coins received. I'm just curious if anyone has any input on what I have and welcome any options and knowledge anyone would like to share with me. My goal with this post is to gain some enlightenment regarding this coin and be aware of what I possibly have in my possession. Thank you in advanced for taking the time to read this post and I look forward to reading what information anyone can offer!

First,

You have an 1888 Newfoundland fifty cent. It was minted when Newfoundland was under British rule. Here is some general information on this coin. Disregard the estimated values on that page. Recently sold listings on ebay provide a better guide for values, and current listings on ebay give a glimpse into the current marketplace.

I'd grade this a VG10, maybe F12 is a stretch. It looks nice for the grade though.

The weak letters in CENTS is normal for the series. The look of these letters is not really due to wear. The coin was more or less struck that way though wear would have played a small part.

It looks like it may have had a cleaning many years ago but is retoning nicely. This I think is evidenced by the pitting, some of which appears to be filled with dirt (grime) while other pitted parts seem to be clear of dirt. I could be mistaken.

Its worth upwards of $100 - $150 cdn for sure. Only 20,000 were minted which makes this a rare coin to have in any condition.

The NFLD 50c is a gorgeous beast. That obverse design is unique - as far as I know it's the only Queen Victoria design that was used exclusively on a coin in this part of the world. The size and weight of it are also very pleasing!
