Has anyone come across a BIE cent that weighs only 2.89 grams? Obviously, this cent looks different from other 1955 D cents. Can anyone tell me what I have here? (2) errors in one? Is it valuable in this circulated condition? Thanks in advance for your help.

Looks acid dipped? Note the porous look on the surface of the coin.

I agree with coop, acid damage, something that happened after it left the mint, so it's post mint damage ( PMD). to the CCF!

I suppose its possible it has been acid dipped or environmentally challenged at one time... I found it in pocket change. Would that take off that much weight from 3.11 grams without destroying the date and letters? thanks for helping.

" take off that much weight " Also remember cent could have been struck on a thin (under-weight) planchet.

A veteran of an acid experience. Nice example with the BIE. Save it as a curiosity.

@mtia, first welcome to CCF. Second, can you please confirm that the other side of this coin has a similar texture? Thx.

Ok yes thx for adding that. It still certainly could be exposure to something corrosive like acid., although then most often both sides look similar. I wonder if this coin wasn't grit-blasted on the obv. In the end it is all just damage, but it is still fun to speculate.
Glad you are enjoying your time here.

I agree that the coin experienced some sort of caustic damage during its life in the wild
