I have been aggressively trying to devour as much info as possible about altered licolns and decided to try this myself. I would like to take some inexpensive bu 50's wheats and apply every known technique to improve the surface. I am hoping some of you guys would send different chemicals and substances that you may have heard or tried yourself. I will take before and after photos of each attempt and post as I go along. I have several early Lincolns I would like to submit but I am afraid to waste money. I want a catalog for future reference. Never would I attempt to resell or deceive anyone. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks John ,the only things I have seen are acetone bathes and something called dell's darkener? Oh! also use an eraser. I have a 1918-s graded AU-58 from NGC but cracked it out the holder 15 yrs ago (not knowing any better) . The coin is a deep uneven chocolate brown. I think it's awesome but I am wondering if PCGS will tag as questionable color since I resubmitted it. Time will tell

Suggest experimenting with 1960s cents. No need to risk damaging innocent wheat cents.

Agree! I'd focus on copper Lincoln memorial cents.

I've been a collector for decades (since I was 7 years old) and even being a good grader I can't tell sometimes when a coin can get detailed. For us non dealers, the best options are acetone or xylene baths (be careful with either product). Anything can make a coin worse.

Here is a coin I submitted for grading as it looked really nice, I saw no hairlines, so I wasn't expected it to be cleaned. It wasn't. But its still detailed and worth less than I paid for it.
