I found this quarter in my change and was wondering what could have caused this much damage to this new of a quarter. Or if maybe it is some type of error coin. Any knowledge shared would be greatly appreciated.

I also just noticed that aside from the heavily damaged front the reverse has a small "S" at the end of states

It appears to be a grease strike, but the uneven surface on the obverse has me raising questions. The reverse has a minor grease strike as well. I want to hear what the othes think.

to the CCF! this coin was struck with Grease Filled Dies. It also looks as if the grease had metal debris from the minting process. The last S in STATES is as designed, so I think that it's just the arch of the lettering makes it look slightly smaller (or lower) than the other lettering. Nice find! It's harder to locate errors on coins after 2007. The mint's quality control program was stepped up around then to limit the number of errors that make it into circulation.

The last S in states is definitely smaller in your picture compared to this:

Thank you for the Welcome and the very interesting and educational link/Read on Grease Filled Dies. Not as rare as I hoped but definitely a good one to hang on to. This is a great community.

This one looks 2x2 worthy to me--plenty of detail is missing. @rbc, can you please also add the weight of this coin to this thread Thx.

Better-than-average grease-filled die example, for sure. Great find!

Wow thanks to the community members that have added to this topic. (Spence) I will be posting the weight as soon as I can. I need to get a scale this afternoon. Great editing on the images (coop).

So I got a scale and zeroed it out. Measured the weight several times and it sometimes weighed 5.71g and most times weighed 5.73g. I weighed it 7 times. I looked online at what it should weigh and found 5.670g. Not sure if this scale is working properly.

When you setup the scale, try pressing the Tare button when it is placed on the surface. That makes sure it is zero.

I'm thinking this one might have a bit of value to it having so many missing (due to grease) details. Check ebay's SOLD listings and see if you can find another similar Greaser to get at least a ballpark idea as to value. to the CCF!
