Hey all,

This 1983p Nickel appears to show die clashing on both the obverse and reverse. There area multiple die cracks travel into Jefferson on the obverse. There are 3 cracks running into from the rim atop of Jeffersons hair traveling downward through Jefferson to the rim below. The main crack on the obverse begins off of the rim, around 12 o'clock, right above Jeffersons head where a small Cud appears. It travels from rim to rim, 12 o'clock to approx 6 o'clock. There are multiple die cracks all around the obverse, off of LIBERTY and the Date which travel into the main crack and spider web to IGWT. It almost appears that the images shift with the cracks. The reverse has the same situation going on throughout.
My questions are
1. What leads to this many cracks to a single die?
2. Would this Nickel be considered a spike head being the main crack starts on the rim, enters Jeffersons hair then travels straight down to the rim below.
3. Would this be a split die, shattered die or neither considering it appears that all the cracks run into the main crack along their travels?
Any information from the community on these types of coins would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Coindom76

@coin, while it is hard to get oriented with these pics showing your coin at various angles, I disagree with what you are calling a cud--that looks more like damage to me. I'm also not seeing any die cracks, but with the coin in hand, you might be able to see them better. Consider adding a couple close-up images of the regions of interest (right-side up please). Thx.

I'm with Spence. I don't see anything of note.

Please, try to orient the coin pictures so they are up-right. that makes it far easier to evaluate the coin and make matches from obverse to reverse without getting a severe neck ache

http://cuds-on-coins.com/jefferson-...-1938-1999/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">The listings jump from 1982 to 1993, so it would be a new listing if it is a spike head. LINK http://cuds-on-coins.com/jefferson-...s-1938-1999/ You would need much clearer pics to send to JC. If you do so, follow the directions to a T. A die clash follows mostly where the bust and the reverse design meet when struck without a planchet between them. These areas hit together are the fields. The clash lines are a transfer of the opposite die and show an outline from the other die.:
Here are some different views of nickels:

So the outline of the bust and the outline of the building are usually the areas affected. Sometimes more depending on the strength of the clash:
Strong die clash:

Extreme die clash:

1983-P-Jefferson-Nickel--Die-Clashing?---Spike-Head?

So on your coin, I'm not seeing a die clash. This is what to look for on nickels.
