Hi!

I found this 1982 D small date penny In a sock drawer.

My question is if it has to be weighed or is the correct font type enough? I will get a scale if need be.

You can weigh it if you like but the corrosion you speak of is zinc rot, not a copper.

Small date zinc Denver coin. Put it back to work. Let it run out its days, working at making change. Just a face value coin.

Unfortunately yes, that's a zinc core Lincoln, complete with zincoln-pox.

Should weigh 2.5 grams, minus a bit for loss of zinc. The elusive copper coin would weigh 3.1 g.

Correct as always are the opinions stated above.
A rotting zinc small date Denver minted Lincoln Cent. I will weight in at about 2.5g

Ans as the OP (original Poster) stated as well, you should get a scale anyway. one that will read out to 2 decimal points accuracy
