For my U.S. type set, I try to get examples from each mint for each type. This serves an additional function of giving me an excuse to pick up additional key dates, sometimes in a lower grade, while still allowing me to get a more common but high-grade type example from a different mint . I just purchased this key date Barber half to fill the "S" slot for this type. I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts on the grade compared to what PCGS thought. The coin is not yet in hand, so these are the seller's pics. Thanks in advance!

I'll say F-15, very choice for grade.

Nice circulation cameo. The central strike is a little bit soft. The denticles are sharp.
The obverse shows slightly more detail than the reverse. The leaves, hair curls, ribbons, and hairline suggest VF-25, although the bottom of LIBERTY is weak. I'm at obverse VF-25 (barely).
The reverse shows sharp peripheral strike, but central weakness. The horizontals of the shield are about half complete, and the verticals are just short of complete. These are consistent with VF-20. The wear on the neck is a bit heavy for VF-20, but some of that may be strike weakness. I'm at reverse VF-20 (weakly).
On balance, net VF-20. Fantastic coin for 1904-S.

The "R" in Liberty is not complete, and the lower ribbon band is completely missing, but some grade this VF?

Might as well be a carbon copy of PCGS photograde for VF-20. So I'll agree with that.

The majority consensus of VF20 is how PCGS saw it, and CAC agreed. I'm looking forward to getting it in hand in the next day or two. Thanks for all the feedback and comments!
