Markers to what? Tell us what you see on your coin and tell us what you think it is.

I thought it was a doubled die variety I believe that's a marker at the end of the motto I thought that was one by liberty one by the initials and one on the memorial

Give us a number as to which double date you are referring to. And maybe a link?

Markers are good for verifying a variety, but you need a variety to attach the markers to. We could do this for you, but you'll get more out of this if you do the legwork. If you have markers, what variety number is it?

Your coin is nothing like that die. You have to match the hub doubling first. Without the doubled die, the markers mean nothing.
Variety first, markers to tell die state to confirm variety, mintmark locations must match on pre 1989 coins. All hub doubling must match exactly to be the attributed die number. Also that year, half the cents had master die doubling. (These are vary common from all mints) So a lot of study goes into this years coins.

This is so true.

To the OP. An analogy that comes to mind would be to say you found a Lambourgini because the car has four wheels and a motor. Four wheels and a motor doesn't make the car.

Many times coins from the same year will have very similar marks on them that can resemble markers for a particular variety.
Keep up the hunt and you'll find one.

Along with the comments above, we may be seeing the emergence of a Die Deterioration Ridge Ring in photos 3 and 4. That would be emergence, not full-blown.

I'm a newbie and they look the same to me. In fact, the date on the coppercoins site looks like all of the other 1972 dates. This stuff is pretty hard! But I'm grateful that there is a coin community willing to pass on their knowledge to us!!!

Well let dwell on this a bit. The biggest clue for the 1972 DDO's on the Philly ones (also the Denver ones will show the same thing) note the shape of the '9' at 11:00:
1972-D-Lincoln-Cent-?
Note the dies 1-8 on the '9' with the arrows. See how the DDO affected that area, and the normal ones are just rounded. (images on the top row) This is an aid you might use on your searches on the 1971-1972 cents. This is what will help you move a lot faster in your searches. When your ready for sorting out which die you have, you can ask when you find on of the DDO for that year. Now you have a clue as what to look for. Save that image for your personal coin files. (If you don't you will have to get in line for the kicking machine for not doing it)
