That is a Chinese counterfeit that has appeared many times on ebay. This one has been reported and hopefully will be removed tomorrow. Thanks for the post.

May I ask if it is the 19 in the date that is worrisome It looks not as sharp as it needs to be. I will say I am a noobie when it comes to a coin like this, and yeah, I probably would get suckered by this pretty badly... Is this an alteration from a genuine 1937-D, or is this a flat-out counterfeit?

Quote: Is this an alteration from a genuine 1937-D, or is this a flat-out counterfeit? As I stated in my post, it is a Chinese counterfeit that is not even close to a genuine 3 leg. If you want more information, make use of the search box in the upper left column and you will find numerous other posts on thissubject.

We posted at the same time here, and I wouldn't know this particular coin being a Chinese fake unless I had a known genuine specimen to compare with, such as PCGS coinfacts which post images to compare with. But in the wild, there would be a higher probability of me not understanding this, and would most likely be fooled if I was not careful.

It lacks the die markers such as the corrosion/roughness in the back leg on the reverse and the back of the neck on the obverse. The coin looks like Play-Doh, with no detail and smooth texture. It is too bad people are quick to bid and lack knowledge on counterfeits.

It's interesting, I have the complete set of Buffalo nickels but never focused on the major errors (though I know about them) such as this, since they are all so rare, the chances of me finding any one of them in the wild is extremely slim... Hence my ignorance on fakes of this series.

One-look fake (check the rear leg).

None of the die markers are present. The eroded rear leg, "pee stream" below the belly, separation of the small feather from the neck line. There are numerous spots that would show signs of Die Deterioration and over polishing, this one shows none. Mushy surfaces and lack of sharpness, including the date, are great indicators to a counterfeit as JimmyD pointed out. There are also a few spots that show raised bumps (in front of the nose, and also a very suspect area above the raised ground above the F in FIVE. Icing on the cake, if it weren't already obvious enough with the lack of all die markers, MM is in the wrong location.

Thanks for the screen shot of the coin, before it was taken down. So often I go to view one of these Chinese fakes, and the listing has been removed.

Nice catch, glad it was removed, and yes a big thanks for saving the photos Ty, it's not always easy to know what happened after the coin gets remove, this one is a pretty bad counterfeit to us knowledgeable collectors, but always good to educate the new collectors, remember, if it's too good to be true, then it most likely is, not to say there is never a deal to had, that comes with time and experience after looking at thousand and thousands of coins.

I've had it pull the first image on a listing that was almost 3 years old.
