I saw a separate topic here that included a photo of a 2021 Morgan, graded and slabbed with a label bearing Mercanti's autograph. I'm used to seeing his autograph on ASE's and Australian Wedge Tailed Eagles, both of which included his designs. Is there a reason he would have some connection to the Morgan dollar design or these 100th anniversary reboots? Is there some other reason for his signature on the label?

There's no direct historical connection involved. It's a matter of a large customer of the grading service looking for another label variant to sell to collectors at a premium (i.e., potential profits). It's not the first time, it won't be the last. It's part of the reason why several designers have signed exclusive deals with a grading service. As part of the deal, their signatures can even be used on coins to which they have no real connection.

I guess I was hoping for some link that I had not heard yet. I have no problem with people or companies making money, but it's just disappointing to see it happening in such a blatant "money grab" kind of way. It's like having one artist sign another's painting, or a baseball player sign another players card - it just doesn't sit right with me.

Lunch Money, You were probably referring to my post. Yeah it was a special set that was sold but at about the same price for the non-signed ones and since most of my collections of ASE's are signed I thought I would get it since it was about the same cost. I agree though that there are so many varieties it's hard to keep up or know which one will be valuable or more collectible. I just go with what I've been collecting as long as it's not a ridiculous over priced item/set. Hope that helps!

IMO, things have gotten way out of hand with the number of label insert varieties available. For example, per the PCGS web site, there are 71 varieties of the "Emergency Issue Struck at San Francisco" insert available for the 2021 American Silver Eagle (Type 1). There are 78 varieties of the Type 1 "Emergency Issue Struck at Philadelphia" ASE insert and 157 varieties of the Type 1 "Regular strike" ASE insert. So, a collector looking to have "one of everything" in their ASE collection would need 206 (at least) coins to have a complete mint state set of PCGS 2021 ASEs. Add in another 79 varieties of the Proof/Reverse Proof ASE inserts, and, all together, a collector would need to pursue 285 different 2021 Type I ASEs to have a complete PCGS insert/label variety set! If that's not excessive, I don't know what is! But as long as customers (i.e., dealers) are willing to pay for the inserts, the grading services will continue to fill orders for them. I've been known to collect more than one example of a given commemorative coin because it was available in more than one official, informational package from the Mint, but I assure you that I don't have 285 examples of any one modern commemorative coin design! (I think I max out at three!)

Really, you have to ask? It's because they can charge more money...

Hey, whatever floats their boat is fine with me as long as they know what they are getting.

I wouldn't pay extra for that label, or any label. I agree buy it for the coin not the gift wrapping. But to each their own.

Mercanti's signature would make me definitely not buy it. I got tired of his ruffled grouse design on the reverse of the ASE real quick.
