Given that this coin must have bought a million penny candies back in the day, I was just going to let it go. But I set it aside and just can't seem to figure out what is going on here. Coin has a raised bar roughly the size and thickness of the ONE CENT Lettering. The dark line on the west side of it is a bit of crud along the base, and there doesn't seem to be anything incised. But it's so worn that it just may be impossible to say it wasn't sliced just perfectly there and worn to look the way it does. Wondering if anyone has seen this on another coin of this date, which looks like an "S" but could be a damaged "D". Thanks 1920-S? Lincoln Wheat cent - raised bar

The bar almost looks like an X coming off the "N" in ONE. I can't say what that is though.
Do you have a close up of the MM?

The mint mark is too soft for a close up to help at all. But sure looks like an S in the full coin pic.

Yes, it does look like an S.

@tb, could that raised mark be from a die gouge? Just spitballing possible explanations.

Well, that feature certainly 'raises the bar', as far as numismatic curiosities go.

Definitely looking forward to more knowledgeable answers. Looks like the bar continues from " n" Cent to "e" in United as well, but lower.

When they are raised on the fields, the die was alter on the field area. Be interesting if there are other ones? (Die damage) Or some other issue that could have caused this.

I like this die anomaly. I've never seen it before so a special thanks for taking the time to share it.
Maybe struck through something that damaged the die? It appears to be similar in length and width to all the upright parts of the Rev letters of ONE CENT.
Maybe a dropped letter of hardened mint grease and debris from one of those letters that damaged the die?

@Tropicalbats. Is this part of the unknown?

It appears to be raised to me, so I don't think it could be a strike through. I almost looks like the letter 'E' was imprinted crooked on to the die. As Coop suggests, I too, wonder if there are more out there like that.

Damage to the die does happen: But it can't be a single device because where are the other devices? Devices are not added to the dies. Just a contact mark.

Thanks for all the great comments! Still unsure what it is, but seems worth posting and pondering. As far as what sort of kinda looks like an E middle crossbar on the raised area, I doubt it. But after waggling the thing all around in the light, there is one angle that does make that look at least a little raised. The surfaces of the coin just seem to make things easier to see from a distance as once you start getting close it all goes to blur.

The reason I asked is it maybe looks like part of the E. Maybe like Petespockets mentioned?

Yeah, it look s a lot like that to me as well, but just not enough detail to really say what's what for sure.
