Decided to finish my IHC collection. Hardest part was deciding what grade to purchase for completion. Heart said AU, Pocketbook said VF. Made this purchase this past weekend at a coin show. Let me know your opinions on the coin. Bought it as a VF grade.

Way out of my comfort zone, but VF certainly seems appropriate. No L, right?

That's the funny part of the story. I really did start buying the keys earlier (L, copper-nickel) thinking I could always get a bronze 1864. Well it was a little harder than I expected.

Yes, I think VF. Nice coin. Round bust tells you it is a 64 no L. How much did you pay?

Probably paid too much, but I bought it from my local coin shop booth at the show. Cost was forty dollars. What do you think?

$40 sounds about right. Spot on Red Book retail for VF. I only have a few IHC but this looks like it has a shot at choice very fine to me. I'd be interested to see what the Grading Forum has to say.

I like that one. $40 is about the Red Book pricing and usually a little high but with coins that are difficult, like IHC's, that is a decent price. Just curious. You said FINISH your IHC collection. Does that include the Flying Eagle cents? Whitman has those in the same Album. Are you including the 1888/7, 09S, etc. That 09S starts at overf $400.

Just Carl: Using the Whitman album for this collection. I do have all the flying eagles in lower grades (my 1856 says copy on the reverse). I did look at an 1856 flying eagle at this coin show. He said I could have it for 12K. Guess it will be slow process to fill this album.

Looks like a nice VF. I see a hint of the first diamond on the ribbon nearest to the head dress but typically you'd look for visibility of the 4 diamonds to get to XF grade. Of course, all just my opinion.
It's a nice coin in a nice grade!

with the others...I'd say a good VF too, and more on the VF30 end. By Snow's grading standard, a VF grade is determined by separation of the ribbon/hair and yours looks to be just on the VF side. Strike plays a large part on diamond/feather detail, as shown here.

ONLY 12K? Sure wish I was at that show. I would have grabbed as many of those he had for that price. Where did you get the one that says copy? I'd like to get a few of those for some of my collections. I have one in really poor grade for set #1. What I like about the Whitman Album is the cover is large so I added pages for sets #2 in the same Album with #1. You can order extra pages from Whitman and those rub on Gold colored numbers/letters. I've done similar with other sets like the Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, etc. I think I'm about ready to start a search for faked other impossible coins such as the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel.
