Hi! New here. I bought my son (he's 13 and a budding collector) the US Mint American Innovation $1 Coin proof set for this year. And there is an extra coin floating around inside the plastic casing. My son is asking me questions I can't answer. Lol Is this a rare occurrence? And does this add value to the set? Any opinions are appreciated! Thank you!

Welcome to CCF! The US Mint uses robots to package coins, mistakes are made. I wonder if someone else got a set with this coin missing from theirs. This is an interesting fun packing error. You could send it back for refund, but I'd definately keep it. In my opinion not much extra value since these are not precious metal coins, no silver, gold. If you read the posts here you'll see the US Mint quality control is sometimes lacking. Some of us got 2021 Morgan and Peace silver dollars with dents, scratches.

I think those cases can be opened. I'd get the errant coin out of there to prevent damage to the case and remaining coins. They are protected by a lip inside the case, but the errant coin has been damaged from sliding around inside. You can keep the extra or spend it (that's what I'd do - may make an interesting tip...)

Ahh so it's more a novelty than it is a "rarity". He still thinks it's really cool to have. Lol He doesn't want to open it so I'll just buy him another set for his collection.
Thank you for the responses and for being so nice!

I would keep it, and I would buy another set.

At the very least, you got an extra dollar out of it.

If the mint is reading this. They may send you a bill for the extra coin. LOL

The lens is not sealed. It would be easy to open, remove the extra coin, and close again without anyone knowing it had happened.
