Necoins: Great find, congrats! That's not crud or glue or any foreign matter. The individuals that posted it's a Retained Cud are correct. Also, just FYI it's not that "AMERICA" is flattened out. The lack of "AMERICA" is because there's no metal available to flow into that part of the die because the metal is used filling the break in the obverse die. You may already know this but if not, maybe it helps! Congrats!

That's a real beauty! I've never seen this die break before and given its size, I'm guessing it must be pretty darn rare. Extremely nice find and congrats! It's worth a good chunk of money.

kind of reminds me of a piece of die that broke off and on this coin was struck onto the cent after the strike onto the next coin and was found attached: On this one, it may have happened but was struck after the die piece was missing off the die? Thus the weight is normal and the affected area is seen on this coin.

As others have said, this is a large Retained Cud (retained corner die break) with an interior die break straddling the border between the Retained Cud and the intact portion of the obverse (anvil) die.

This is it's new resting place for now. Showed it to someone at work and they brought in a plastic staple coin holder. I think I'm going crazy but I can't stop thinking about this penny.

It's an extraordinary find.
You should submit photos to CudsOnCoins.com to get it listed.

CoinHi. Looked into this after your post. Looks like a decent amount of photo editing required to submit...What happens when you submit a coin to them? It's listed as an official error?

It's a way to categorize and to reference these types of errors. I guess it is more relevant to coins with full dates but they do have "no-date" reference listings. Interesting now that I look, there are no "no-date" Retained Cuds listed for modern cents, so could be a unique listing. Your coin is an error as experts have confirmed here.

This is a "no date" Shield Cent Cud. But on a Facebook group I'm in some member found a whole obw bank box of 2021 shield cents and he's been pulling out a BUNCH of these Cuds he posted three of them when he first found them. This is a 2021 shield cent.
