It's just split plating, very common with the copper plated zinc cents. Here is a link that explains and shows it well.

Also, I agree with @make's assessment of this being split plate doubling. The underlying zinc core is very clearly visible.

On the date on the right side you can see on the fields a beginning of DDD. Die Deterioration Doubling. This is always only on the fields and in the direction to the closest rim.(neither have a premium. Just a spender.

I agree, split plating. Next stop, zinc rot since the zinc is now exposed. With zinc rot,the coin literally eats itself. Spend it while you can!
