I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I'll ask here.
I don't typically send my stuff away for grading. I keep it all in the OGP. HOWEVER. space is at a premium, and I don't want to buy safes every year. So how do you all store your coins and medals? Do you separate the coin from the OGP? Just keep finding new places to store things? I enjoy growing my collection, but I am afraid I'll have to turn my spare bedroom into a vault soon!

I keep the coins in their Mint capsules, but remove them for the rest of their OCP. I then keep the capsules in coin trays from Lighthouse. The trays (Lighthouse calls them Coin Boxes): a) allow me to see 20 or more coins at the same time b) enable quick and easy access to the coins c) offer protection and help prevents scratches to the capsules Here's a link to learn more about the Lighthouse trays: https://www.lighthouse.us/collect-c...accessories/ I buy the boxes with the smoke#8197;colored#8197;drawers#8197;and#8197;dark-red#8197;velours#8197;inserts. As far as the rest of the packaging, I keep it all in file boxes stored on the floor of a closet.

I do something similar to what commems mentioned. I collected the ATB 5-oz puck series and those were quickly chewing up the space in my safe (I think I did a thread about this several years ago). I finally separated the capsules from the OGP and put all the OGP in a tote in the attic. Doing that saved tons of volume (something like 70%) and I am able to store all 56 issues on one shelf. I moved many of my ASEs to CAPS albums as well. I'm not sure how much space that actually saves but it's pretty significant considering an album can store 64+ ASEs. I'm getting to the point where I am running low on space in the safe again, and I think I will need to separate the rest of my ASEs from OGP, as well as commemorative coins to free up space. Sounds like a good post-Christmas project, and since I don't like the idea of the capsules just loose in the safe, I'll probably look at commems' idea about the lighthouse trays/coin boxes or something similar.

GREAT IDEAS.....
I have been collecting ALL OGP since day one. It is difficult to store collections for decades in ALL OGP.
Many ideas, I feel the storage of the " Original package" means space, which is as mentioned, at a premium . I collect to have Original, I would NEVER wish to loose a package........................................ Collect, Store and Manage Your coins collected, as You see fit to do....
Sure it takes space, All the more valuable, to Me....OGP'G LOVER.!!!!

I like that Lighthouse tray referenced by Commems. I might need to buy on of those for the presidential medals series I'm collecting. I had originally planned to keep them in OGP but they do take up the space. Plus, it's hard to have a view of your coins when you need to remove the slipcover, open the box, open the clamshell, etc. For my growing slab stash I have ordered an album from Safe: https://www.safepub.com/coin-collec...-coins-slabsSince I also collect stamps, my shelving is all set up for me going crazy with albums.

All of the suggestions above are great ideas. I'm in that very same boat At the moment. I'm looking to get into the lighthouse albums for my ASE's and maybe the slabs too. Not sure which way to go yet. (I am planning to get all my ASE proofs slabbed, and keep the burnished/uncirculated in their original caps.

Quote:Doing that [separating ATB OGP from capsules] saved tons of volume (something like 70%)... Actually I found my math and it worked out to closer to 90% volume savings for the ATB 5-oz pucks. I imagine the number is similar for ASEs and most other coins. Of course 90% is if you're just stacking them in their capsules and not putting them in some other storage solution.

If a coin is not slabbed (graded), I try to keep them in the OGP. I'm running out of space like many of you have mentioned. I have been considering my options, but I've have not pulled the trigger on the mentioned solutions just yet.

I have many things in OGP that I intend to keep in OGP. All the OGP for coins which have been freed to put into my Dansco albums (proof and mints sets for the most part) are kept in a box in storage. Right now the only decision I have is the American Innovation Dollars proof and reverse proof coins. They are in OGP, but will eventually move to an album. I just need to decide which album solution I will pursue (Dansco, CAPS, Lighthouse...)

The coins in the AI annual sets are (relatively) densely packed and the cardboard sleeve is very thin so you won't see much space savings with those. The individual RPs on the other hand, will be an enormous space savings. Prsonally I don't keep the RPs or the proofs in my safe currently due to space constraints but I might move them there if I free up room by any of the methods discussed above.

Those of you that remove the coins from OGP, do you keep the OGP or get rid of them? I plan to keep mine.

The individual RPs on the other hand, will be an enormous space savings. I am not really worried about space saving. I could easily keep the entire run in OGP if I had to, but I do not want to; I want to make it easier to view them as a series. I imagine if anyone ever found that box (ala Storage Wars) they might think they hit a jackpot, until the opened the OGP to see the coins had been liberated.

In case you were wondering... Here are a pair of (poor-quality) images on one of my Lighthouse trays - one is fully closed, the other is partially open via the sliding back of its cover.
