I found this cent among a lot of wheat cents that I acquired from ebay. This is a raised area of a 1947 S Wheat cent going from Lincoln's head far out into the field under the word "TRUST", almost to the rim. It looks like it may be a Cud, but is there anything else this may be. Under a microscope it looks like it may be an extra piece of copper that was stamped into the obverse of the coin while it was being struck, like a piece of wire or something added to the coin blank, but I'm not positive. It wasn't added after the striking because the detail from the strike is been within the error. It's firmly on the coin as its been in circulation for 74 years and hasn't moved. I'm looking for ideas of what this may be if it's not a giant Cud.

Guessing this is a retained interior did break (RIDB)? Handsome example. Can you provide full pics of both sides, please.

Appears to be a lamination issue, perhaps intermingled with a die crack or two. Cuds are typically associated with rims--to appear as smooth-ish blobs of metal which abut the rims.

Please show us a reverse image--large and sharp. True Cuds typically have an impact on the reverse.

I'd call it a lamination error.

@csp, first welcome to CCF. Second, I'm on team lam on this one (plus some rim damage above Abe's head).

A little lower and we'd have a gigantic Pinocchio nose. Nice example.

I always yield to Dr. coop, so lamination it is. Agree that the rim issue is damage.
