Hi All

I have come across a one yen coin which appears to be gold but unable to find any reference that this coin was ever minted in gold so thinking its a fake, however the details are

Diameter 39mm
Weight 26 grams
NON magnetic
believed to be 1896

Thought welcome.

Thanks

I'm with you on this. Maybe a modern fake made in bronze and then either never plated with silver or else had the silver plating stripped off? You could do a quick specific gravity test to confirm what alloy it is though.

A round one Yen gold coin from Japan should be 12mm or 13.5mm and weigh about 1.67grams.
It should be dated in the 1870s to 1880s.
If it is gold, then someone may have been hobbying with a home electroplating kit.

I expect the SG number was a 7 or 8?
Instead of 10.3 for silver or 13-19 for various golds?

Recent Chinese-made brass replica. Replica/fake coins like this are being mass-produced in China and exported by the shipping-container-load. Very common to "come across" these things in street markets throughout the Western world these days.
