Hi
My first post here. I'm new to this hobby so don't know enough yet to figure out what this 88 Lincoln Cent is about and extensive searches haven't turned up anything.

I call this my Tiger Striped penny. The obv rim at top seems rounded and (to me) gives the appearance of some of the letters in Trust being detached. I've noticed shadowing in some of the letters too but don't know enough yet to know what that is either.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I hope I've posted this correctly and in the right forum.

Thanks,
Trek

The obverse is showing the infamous ridge ring--which is a key indicator of Die Deterioration. The reverse looks like it's carrying a massive thumb print. Others will be along to comment.

The Ridge Ring is a die event. Part of DDD on the die breakdown. The reverse of the fingerprints is an issue that slowly turns the coin into brown. The salts in perspiration on the prints alter the surface of the coin. This is a process that removes the original color and is often seen on BU coins, but not a plus for the coin.

When you notice these on your coin, it is too late to remove them. They are there to stay and get worse.

So the coin is interesting, it is more educational than a premium for the coin. More of just a face value coin. Hope this helps.

ijn1944. That Die Deterioration seems tricky.

John1 I never thought of that but you're right rev looks like a huge thumb print. So long Tiger Stripe Lincoln.

Thank you both

that is one huge fingerprint on that coin. Never heard it called a tiger stripe before. It is fitting though.

Coop, photos are a great learning tool and yours (with explanation) helped. Very appreciated.

Someone had some grimy paws.

Jbuck and Dearborn thanks for the warm welcome.
