This could have been brought up before but I can't seem to find it. Might as well make a thread. Both 1985 and 1993 50 cents are struck at 1 million each, however it seems that the 1993 is much easier to find compared to the 1985. For roughly a 1985 50 cents that I found, I found 4 - 5 1993 50 cents. What is your experience? Are the 1985 50 cents hoarded more than the 1993? Or a good portion of 1985 50 cents melted down? Statistically wise, this doesn't seem to make sense.

Rennicks indicate that 2,217,000 1993 50 Cents coins were minted.
Dave Allen of I.S. Wright once told me:- "The rare coins get rarer, the common coins stay common." - I guess that may be due to collector activity expressed in a more intense search for the 1985 coin, over a period of 8 more years.
When it comes to mint uncirculated sets, the 1985 5 Cents was only issued in green mint packs, and I guess that almost all of the pristine 1985 50 Cents coins are still in those mint packs. I know; I bought a dozen 1985 mint packs off Dave Allen in 1985, and sold them for quite a profit 2 years later, when I needed shock absorbers for my 1978 Holden VC. A good Holden VC will set you back $60,000 these days. That is a pity - I sold the car 3 years later for not much.

yes my experience is that 1985s are about 60% less common than the 1993 50s. With loads of people wanting to buy 50c pieces 1985 @ $10 even more sometimes, where as 1993 no more than $4.

My experience too - I've only ever found two or three 1985 50c pieces in the wild.

I wonder why there is a mintage difference between the RAM published report and Rennicks.
That said, if you believe what the numbers are on the RAM site, mintage for the 2019 and 2020 JC are ever smaller than the 1985 50 cents! Have found a bunch but time can only tell if they are really scarce.

Maybe there was a hunt for 1985 fifty cent coins back in the late 80s when it became apparent it was such low mintage. When 1993 came out with similar mintage the hunters probably didn't have the same motivation to track them down.

Since I have been keeping records I have found 39x 1985 and 127x 1993 50 cent coins.
That's a ratio of 3.25 1993 coins to every 1985 found. (13:4)

I have no idea. I find one of each for my collection and then stop looking. Quote: sold them for quite a profit 2 years later, when I needed shock absorbers for my 1978 Holden VC. The spare parts salesman in me couldn't let this go by. Sel, that would be a VB model or your year is wrong. :)
