This is not my coin. I am wondering what you all think of the market acceptability of this coin--it is in a straight graded holder--and the details look really nice! I know it is a scarce coin, especially in high circulated grades, but am I seeing scratches on the obverse? Why would PCGS straight grade this coin? Don't get me wrong--I think it is a very nice Draped Bust dollar! I am just wondering what constitutes "market acceptable" and what doesn't. Also what grade do you think it deserves? Scratches seem old and well toned-in. Pretty wonderful example to my eye.

My Two Cents of cynicism: I have learned to take the eye candy True View pics with a grain of salt. They have become masters of the art, but in hand it might not be quiet the great. And being a high value coin, that they gave a little leniency to that obverse scratch as "market acceptable" doesn't shock me. Still a wonderful coin. Buy the coin, not the holder or the True View.

What's going on at IC on the reverse? Is it plugged?

they are a lot more lenient on 18th century coins. the scratches on this one are not significant enough to details the coin. I've heard that they look for displaced metal to determine it. in this case...none displaced.

A real beauty. I'll throw out a guess of AU-55

I'm thinking the sharpness of EF45 with points off for the obverse scratches and hard hit on the reverse at A in America. Net EF40 for me.

I personally think it is XF-40, but I think PCGS gave it an XF-45. The scratches aren't too bad, so they shouldn't detail the coin.

They called it a 45! You guys really seem to be able to predict the behavior of TPGs as well as anyone.

It looks very promising and the PCGS grade has real meaning, but keep in mind that TrueView pics lie. At least in my experience.
Heritage Auctions now provides their own pics in addition to Trueview, because there were so many complaints about deception.
