I got this with change for a coffee. Was wondering if someone can help w/ why the letters look close and weakly struck on both sides happy new year stay safe and happy hunting

It is a well worn coin. as the rim wears down, it gets wider, making it appear that the lettering is closer to the rim.

Nice find!

Agree with the above. The coin has seen many, many years of circulation, which leads to a good deal of circulation wear. Your coin looks like most worn wheat cents from 1909 through the 1930s.

I'm with these guys. Very cool find in change though, that's fantastic! I have yet to find a 1909 in the wild.
