I'm stuck and can't make a decision and was hoping the good folks here may lend their thoughts on the matter...
1907 PCGS MS-62 or 1908 PCGS MS-65?
1907 is a much lower mintage but MS-62 coins are not lookers yet 1908 is as plentiful and common but in MS-65 will look great!
As a side thought... I also found a cheap 1907 PCGS in AU-58 which looks pretty good...
Which one would you get? Edited by RoLik 01/11/2022 07:41 am

Pictures are a little helpful but not very much if these three are your choices. Top one is out. Has little eye appeal and will be a tough re-sell. Sometimes an AU58 can have great eye appeal as does No 2. If you have the money and want No. 3, well, there you go. I would be happy with No. 2 pictured.
There's two sides to every coin. (actually three if you count the edge)

I would go for the 1907 AU-58.

AU58 —- it's a no brainer in my opinion.

Are you after bang for the buck or a certified gem? The downside with that MS62 is that it could easily be AU on a different day in my view of the coin, but the AU58 doesn't have that downside.

If I was merely a collector wanting to open my album and feel good, the AU58 might be a great choice if it's priced as an AU58. I could look at that over the years and feel fine with my life's decision at that moment. I don't know how much more $ the MS65 is listed for, are we talking a a few hundred more on a $2k coin or a grand+ more?
I'd stay away from the MS62 unless it was being sold for under scrap and you planned to quickly flip if for a profit. If I was going to tie up that kind of money into something ugly and hard to sell, I'd finally buy an AMC Gremlin and at least have fun putting around town in the ugliest car on the street. That ugly MS62 doesn't even bring entertainment value IMO.

A bit hard to compare since the photos were taken with different lighting and technique, but it would be hard to go wrong with the 1907 AU-58. I agree with avoiding the MS-62.

So the consensus is a 1907 in AU58 over 1908 in MS65?

Do you think the prices for the AU58 and MS65 are fair to you? Is one a relative better deal than the other? They are both fair? One is priced high but is pretty?

1907 is $2,1000 and 1908 is $2,500
I guess it comes down to rarer date vs quality

And the last and most important question: which one would make you happier? Down the road, which one do you think you will look at and think, that was a good buy and I am proud I did this? (Least likely to result in buyers remorse?) - Only you can answer this one.
The AU58 with good eye appeal might be a good "value" at $2100. But that's coming from a bunch of folk not actually about to drop $2K+. An MS65 for "only" $400 more at $2500 might have the appeal and higher grade combination that makes you happy even if its a more common coin in general. Its easy for us to give advice when our stake in the game is a few key strokes of our wisdom and experience. That $400 is more than many Community members spend in a year, some newbies have never spent $2500 ever on the hobby! You're the one about to tie up $2+ into a gold coin, so make it something that makes you happy to hold and look at and have on the personal balance sheet as it wont be ours to brag about and explain to the accountant.
