I put on layaway today an attractive 1795 flowing hair dollar in PCGS fine details grade. It got me thinking I would like to put together a dollar type set. If I stuck with "large" dollars through Eisenhower which dollars need to be included to be considered complete by most collectors? Trade dollars? 1921 peace? 1921 Morgan? How about 2021 peace and Morgan's? I know a collection is made up of whatever the collectors want but what have other dollar type collectors included and why? |

Good question. If I had a set, it would include flowing hair, draped bust small eagle, draped bust heraldic eagle, Seated dollar without motto, Seated dollar with motto, Trade dollar, Morgan dollar, Peace dollar, and Eisenhower dollar. I would not include the high relief issues, proofs, or minor design changes. If you want to do something more than a Dansco 7070 Type Set, the Whitman Type Set has more coins including older types. At least one of every type, but you need lots of money to do that. For less well healed collectors, how about a mm set of Morgan and Peace dollars, say in MS-60 or better? - or perhaps in a lesser condition, but then you can add other types when you are able to, in an incomplete set but with the condition rather balanced. Actually, you could use this approach for any denomination that you may fancy. A silver dime set is perhaps easier to achieve for a greater number of collectors. Of course, the earliest types are steeped in American history. |

Thanks for the tip on the Whitman type album. I love the early dollars but the prices are a stretch for me. My goal this year is to pay off this 1795 over the next few months then do a 93-s Morgan in about G6 to G8 which will complete my Morgan set. My peace is complete. Then a lifetime of upgrading some of the Morgan's.

I've thought about doing this as well, and would only stick with the major design differences, non proof, intended for commerce. Once I start adding new criteria, small design changes, varieties, the list would get WAY to long to be doable  . I'd love to be able to add the Gobrecht to the list, but it's cost prohibitive. I wouldn't even think ONCE about adding the sterile 2021 Morgan/peace to the list. Bullion is bullion  |

If you're going to include non-circulating, bullion or commemorative, seems like you'd want a Lafayette dollar.

I focus on silver and solely the large sized dollars, but my set includes 'world' coins that were produced in US mints for entities of interest for the US. Wow that's quite a list. I like it and the PCGS registry set. It's a more complex question than I realized. A lot of different ways to approach a dollar type set.
