1947 Jefferson With Weak Mintmark

I recently picked up a 1947 Jefferson nickel with a VERY weak mintmark. I was initially sure it's an 'S', but now am fairly convinced it's a 'D'.

There are steps on the Monticello, and overall the grade is pretty decent, perhaps EF-40. Therefore, the weak mint mark is not due to wear.

Does anybody know of similar examples, or a possible reason?

Still fairly hard to tell from the photos. Looks like a faint MM but maybe others can state their opinions.

Looks like a Strike through grease D mint. A larger image may tell more. It appears that the fields are uneven in that area.

When I looked a second time today, I also started re-thinking my 'S' assertion and am leaning towards 'D' too.

I will try to get a better picture, but I'm a newbie at coin photos.

What's frustrating is that, yes, the fields are discoloured in that area. I just thought it was too much of a coincidence to see that extra noise in the MM area.

I have a 1969-D Jefferson nickel with a weak "D". I'll try to post some pics later today.

Here is the 1969-D Jefferson nickel I have, and I also just found this 1964-D LMC with a very weak MM.

Thank you - very interesting weak 'D's. Mine is much mushier looking than those.

I am now modifying my original post to include a slightly better pic, along with one showing most of the reverse. You see, it's not in terrible grade at all.
