I got this penny in change the other day. The obverse is in fairly good condition to have been in circulation but the reverse is another story. What would have caused this kind of damage? Thanks

. The reverse looks like it has glue or something similar on it. Only one person knows for sure how the back of the coin got damaged like that, the person who did it.

It looks like glue that someone tried to scratch off.
Try an acetone bath over night to loosen it up. then try to peal off the glue. I'm curious to see if the scratches went through to the coin itself.
Rest in Peace

Yes, give it a soak in 100% acetone--those scratch-like features may be in the glue/crud. Let us know what happens if you try acetone.
Rest in Peace

To CCF , the acetone soak is a good idea but I think some of those scratches are in the coin .

I agree, scratches and glue and we'll never know who did this damage or why. But it looks to be intentional certainly.

Damaged. Use some 100% pure acetone to remove the glue on the back.

The area where the glue was, but is no longer, is probably a scrape to remove it from the coin damaging that area of the coin. The obverse devices seems like they may have been rubbed on the tops of the devices. Possible Gumball Machine Damage on the '9'
