So while going this bag of nickels my 92yo pawpaw gave me just yest, I found this 1971D half dollar, with a fairly smooth, not perfectly round and not centered (like someone trying to make a necklace. Is it possible this wasn't done after it left the mint?

It was not minted this way (not possible), this is purely post mint damage. People do strange things to coins; we'll never know how/why this hole was done unless you can ask the person responsible for doing it directly.

Indeed, a rather stark example of post-strike damage. Certainly didn't leave the striking chamber with a hole in it.

Yes it is possible not to be perfect round. Is direct proportional with the tools you use.

It doesn't look like it was hit with a nail and hammer, for the most part the inside edge of the hole appears to be quite smooth in places, more corroded in others! I do see where almost looks like another hole to the left was started/attempted, that looks more centered, like you were making a necklace or something, but can't figure out how they'd make a hole like that with lil to no damage in immediate vicinity?

Thanks for the insight! I have no idea what can or can't make it out of the mint, looking at some errors, I'd think a hole would make it past q.c. as opposed to some of the errors that obviously made it out?

@ccb, could be a drill hole. It looks to me like whoever did this practiced a bit first and discovered that they were too close to the rim. That would explain the divot next to this hole.

No that occurred after it found a life in the wild. But going by the images given (of which are VERY good) I'd have to say that it was punched out and not drilled. Being near the edge maybe the coin got distorted as it was being punched and that is why it is not a perfect circle.

It helps a lot to learn the minting process.

It's not a question of it making it out of the mint with the hole, it is a question of whether the hole could happen during the minting process. The answer to that one is definitely not!

Sounds like the most obvious suggestion. I agree.
