Hello,

I bought this today at a reasonable price and was surprised to see it in a mint box. It's a 1997, no mint mark, bullion coin, yes? It's not a proof.

With silver at $5.00 in 1997, why would this be in a box? It's just a bullion coin, yes? Am I missing something?

Thank you!

Pretty sure its a standard ASE, But the mint sold these as gifts in special presentation boxes / cases.
I've been collecting for a couple years... Favorite Coin's are Standing Liberty quarters, Working on my type set | Coffee, Corvettes, Coins & the CCF what could be better?

That's what I thought. So nice bullion presentation box?

It's hard to find them online because I keep finding the proof sets when searching for ASE with box ...
Thanks!

The Mint did not sell standard bullion Silver Eagles directly to the public in 1997 (still doesn't). Those wanting the bullion coin purchased them from dealers/distributors. The Mint used to sell the specific box you've shown as a separate (no coin) item. Many dealers purchased the empty cases, placed standard bullion coins in them and then sold them at a premium.

I've purchased the boxes/cases in the past on behalf of a coin club - we inserted current bullion ASEs into them and used them as awards. Combined, they made for a nice presentation piece.

That makes sense. So it is a bullion coin in nice shape because it was kept in a nice box... That's what I thought. Thank you !

nice information, Commems, thanks

Agreed! Even as a 20-year collector of ASEs, I did not know that.

Thank you all.

I liked the box too ... Knowing it wasn't a proof set, but curious...
