lighting glare could be hiding a lot here. there is a fingerprint on obv K11. its difficult to determine surface originality. there seems to be an excessive amount of chatter on the cheek. the 21(S) is typically weak and soft for strike and we see that here. the coin could be anywhere from AU58 to MS63 and there is a chance the coin would details. this is not one I would have bought using these photos

It seems like that glare is probably hiding some extra chatter. Assuming this is a weak strike and there is not any hidden circulation chatter in the fields, I am at MS61.

I appreciate the comments and grading insights thus far. I actually bought this one for the variety rather than grade, but obviously hope she's MS. Thanks and keep the comments coming!

An MS grade would be a huge win for this one. Was it a wild catch?

Quote: Was it a wild catch? This was an online auction. The coin is raw and there was no attribution mentioned. I saw the thorn head, but can't be sure of the particular VAM. Thanks for everyone's continued insights. Edit: I paid mid-AU 21S money for this one hoping for MS...

Photos have a lot of glare but looks to be AU-58 to MS-62 range, assuming no problems in hand.

There's a fair amount of detail missing from the eagle breast and locks above the ear (the high point on the brow appears wear-free). Even if that's what the mint churned out, I don't think TPGs will be very tolerant of a weak strike on the high-mintage 21s. I just can't see this coin winning an MS grade, even MS60.
There's too much glare to determine surface authenticity, but I'm guessing it is fine. Assuming there's original luster, AU53 is best I would hope for.

Some of the weird appearance is due to die characteristics associated with this particular group of 21-S VAMs.
My grade MS61. I don't think it saw circulation.
