The darker part of this half dollar is copper colored in an irregular pattern.

Yes, appears to be toning/staining. An accurate weight of the coin could tell us more.

Different environments can produce all sorts of strange colors on coins. Just a spender here.

This coin had seen quite a bit of circulation, it could have gotten that toning from almost anywhere.
