I don't think every coin dealer is looking to pay according to melt for BU Peace dollars to make 100% profit on a sale. If wholesale is $30 per coin (example number), a dealer may pay $22-$28 per coin. This is a similar situation to bullion, low profit margin but larger volume. If a dealer pays $25 per coin and sells them wholesale at $30, that is $8,500 profit achieved in a few days. It just depends on the dealer, which is why you call around.

Also, ebay sold listings gives you some of the most accurate coin values, although you need to factor in fees and shipping.

Wow what a bounty, it's not often we hear of such a hoard. I'll never forget, as a 10 year old going through my great grandfathers cigar box of maybe 30 silver dollars, mostly culls, probably taken out of circulation in the 60's, where he worked at the city golf course. I thought I'd gone to heaven! Was your family member a serious coin collector?

Awesome inheritance! Your benefactor invested in a literal hard asset that locked in some real value. It's much more common to hear stories like dansd's, where a relative dumped money into "investments" that turned out to be nearly worthless.

With this many coins I would expect that some would be pretty high grade. The PCGS Coin Facts web page shows recent auction prices for 1922 dollars graded by PCGS. Minimum sale prices for MS-64, 65, and 66 examples are $115, $139, and $552, respectively. It might pay off handsomely to have an experienced collector examine the hoard and pick out the nicest pieces for professional grading. You could possibly negotiate a discount grading rate if you submit a large group of coins.

1700 unslabbed Peace dollars is a stack. While it is worth looking tor high grade MS coins, the cost of slabbing all of them isn't worth it. Selling them raw piecemeal on ebay incurs a lot of fees, packing and shipping costs and sketchy buyers. Extracting $30 each from 1700 buyers will shorten your life considerably.

I've sold coins like this to get coins that I actually want. I've never wanted a 1923 Peace dollar.

I will take my time to sell to local coin shop rather than ebay. I know there are several coin clubs in San Diego, should I reach out to them for recommended reputable coin dealers or to connect with collectors in the area?

That's a nice stash you picked up. Local coin clubs may also have coin auctions at their meetings (Mine did each month). Might be an easy way to unload those rolls and hopefully learn more about the hobby. Best of luck!

I really appreciate all the responses. I hate to admit that I'm into this silver coin now a lot more than I thought. I found a receipt that my friend paid for a couple of rolls of 20 coins at $699 in 2016 so he paid $35/coin with silver spot at $17. No one has the crystal ball but given the current inflation, I'm leaning toward holding out and hoping to unload it at $4-5 above the spot price when silver crosses $30. Am I being unrealistic?

My local coin clubs seem to be meeting remotely due to Covid. I found out there will be a coin show in July so I might bring a few rolls with me to see what I can get then.

Can you tell us who sold your friend the coins? Maybe a bullion dealer?

I would also consider Great Collections Auction House as they have a "Uncertified, Raw and Bulk" section and their seller premiums are very reasonable.

I'm mostly retired & buy/sell stuff on a part time basis. There's absolutely no way I would consider selling these on ebay. If I can't make a minimum of $15/item it's not worth the time to take pictures, list, pack, ship, & deal with potential customer issues. IMO there's no way these would sell for enough over what I could sell for elsewhere to cover fees & pay for my time.

It's been several years since I sold to them but I'd suggest contacting APMEX for a quote. Their buy prices vary depending on quantity. When I sold to them they paid within a couple dollars of their sell price for quantities of $10,000 and over. They are currently selling BU Peace dollars for $34.99. Based on my experience they would pay around $32. The process was fairly simple. They gave me a quote, I shipped registered mail, & they paid what we agreed on once they got there.

On a side note, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for $30/ozt silver. It's a possibility.... & so is sub $20/ozt. Not to mention the tax consequences. If you inherited your cost basis is the value when you got them. If the value increases while you hold you will have to pay tax on the increase. Depending on your tax bracket that could make holding less attractive.

There is no right or wrong answer on holding onto your coins until silver hits a target price. Silver and gold are both a hedge against inflation.

You might want to consider selling off the low end of 200 or 300 circulated coins to get your feet wet on selling coins to dealers, coin shows, ebay, etc.

@smat45 from what I saw so far, he bought them from various places, likely from ads on TV. I attached the pic from one of the receipt. We put everything in the safe and kept a few with us, just happened to ran across from this small coin stuck in between his paper file.

@trdhrdr007, thanks for suggesting the APMEX, looks like it's a happy medium between dealing with coin dealers and ebay buyers.

@Slider23 how do you know I have a small bag of 1921 and 1922 circulated coins lol. Thanks for the suggestion.

1921 are going for a huge premium right now. If it was me, I'd hold onto them as a "stack" investment for the future. They are not going to lose value as higher inflation sets in. People invest in silver as a hedge. We don't know what the future holds.

My friend also left me a bunch of graded silver and gold coins but I'm so confused by the discrepancies guided values between NGC/PCGS, numismedia, and sold prices on ebay. Am I correct to used all as ballpark price when dealing with coin dealers?

I use ebay sold, auction realized prices at Heritage and Great Collections to set value on coins. I use the NGC/PCGS as the retail price. A dealer will want to buy a coin for less than the auction realized price or retail.

Your 1859 $3 gold AU50 is a difficult coin to price in the current market as the AU50 grade has not sold at auction in over 3 years. PCGS list the coin at $1400. The $1400 seems reasonable, but the coin could sell for more or less at auction in the current market. If I was going to sell this coin today, I would sell it at Great Collections. Depending on the quality of the coin a CAC submittal for a sticker should be considered.

@trdhrdr007 APMEX offered 29 and went up to 29.75 for 1000 coin BU so it's about $5 above the spot. They currently have 1922 BU listed at $819/roll of 20, I was hoping for $32.

@Slider23 Looks like Great Collection has the lowest fee. Thanks

@EDM Morgan Silver looks very rough though so not sure about values.
