An odd coin to be sure. I was thinking it was a series of die dents too in looking at the pictures 1 and 2, but pictures 5 and 7 make it look like this is damage. This is due to the divots and smeared metal that is visible.

Hi and thanks again. I ended up finding over 100 of these coins in a bank box all pretty much identical so I think the die dent theory woks best. Any thoughts?.

Ok yes great point. If this was damage then it would be unusual to have these areas line up perfectly. On the other hand if these are die dents then presumably there are thousands with them in the same location.
