Looking to assemble a proof set for my father's upcoming birthday June 4, I happened across a coin with a grade I'd not seen as of yet. Followed by several questions looking at it. First, if we compare the wear to a normal issue the grade translates to an EF, I'd say more towards an EF20 than EF40, based on the smoothness of the thigh and breast areas of Lady Liberty and the breast feathers of the reverse eagle. So how does this get a CAC for the grade? Are they somehow saying it boarders on a PF50? Finally, at what point does a circulated proof become impaired and details graded?

Not that I'm buying this example, mind you. I'm shooting for a 67 as it was my birth year and his first born. A nice touch, no?

I agree with you. Looks more worn than the grade would suggest

I agree the coin appears to be overgraded at PF40 when compared to business examples at the XF40 grade, and both PCGS and CAC may have missed on this one, The green sticker simply means per CAC: "The coin has been verified as meeting the standard for strict quality within its grade".

Interesting that the coin is the lowest graded proof in the Walking Liberty half dollar series, so there is not another proof at grade to compare.

I would also agree. XF40 looks a little generous, even for a business strike. Given it's proof, one can assume almost all intended design detail was present post strike. That said, looks VF to me as well.

As for the "impaired" side of things; I've always considered anything below UNC to be impaired, but only considered "details" if it shows signs of damage (cleaning, heavy distracting scratches, etc) just as a business strike would be. I wouldn't consider a proof "details" for circulation wear alone.

This is just another example of the reality when subjectivity is the standard for grading rather than coins being graded using a verifiable standards.

We cannot expect scientific type results when, as the companies say, grading is an art and not a science.

I agree with the comments that the coin is possibly over graded. I can't imagine there are enough collectors of "lowball" proof coins to justify the price of a PF65 or PF66 of the same date, even though it's the lowest graded proof of the series. Maybe I'm mistaken, though; I guess we'll see if it actually sells...

This looks similar to an xf40 all day long.

Full breast lines tells me everything I need to know.

That is the indication it is atleast xf40
