Hello,

The coin below, although not overly apparent in the picture, has a cartwheel effect when put in the light. Is the clearly whizzing? As my many bumbling posts demonstrate, I am slowly and clumsily learning numismatics...

Any insights would be appreciated!

Thank you!

It is fair to say the coin has been cleaned. The photos aren't good enough to tell how. This is a well circulated coin, it shouldn't look like this.

I think I am confident enough to agree it is certainly cleans . . . but it has some cartwheel effect to both sides . . . it is very artifical and strange looking . . .

I agree with 1847bill - it's a circulated coin and better images are needed to provide detailed assessments.

My initial reaction is cleaned and polished vs. whizzed, but better images would definitely clarify.

I don't think these photos are much better...but the cleaning looks unlike most of the cleaning I have seen ... Terribly unnatural.... Since I am new to collecting I cannot really understand why anyone would do that to a 175 year old coin... But I remember as a kid my grandfather having my brother and I polish some Kennedy halves....he thought it added value ....

it very common on older coins especially to point of over cleaned (where they have to overpolish and almost bleached the coins)?

1847bill is right.
Now not much over silver value, but still a collectible coin at the right price.

Thanks everyone... These 5 franc coins are pretty common in Rome. I am going to wait for this one to come down in price to about spot (should get to about 2 euro over spot) in a month or so ...
