1940 Wheat Penny Error

Hi there, I don't know a whole lot about coin errors and mistakes other than that they exist and are usually hard to spot. That being said I'm pretty positive that I have come across and spotted an error on this penny. What I don't know is what kind of error this was and how it happened and how common or rare this particular error is and if I should get it graded and ect. I appreciate and thank you guys in advance for any other information you can give me.

Note a mint error coin. It is a victim of a Gumball Machine:

@sweet, first welcome to CCF. Second, rather than an error, the last digit in the date was flattened. We see examples of this quite often here and typically ascribe this damage to the coin mechanism of a Gumball Machine.
