I just opened a mint set from 1969 and the D penny has something on it. None of the other coins in the D set had anything like this on it. There were no rips or tears in the penny square. I am confident in saying whatever it is came from the Denver mint 53 years ago. I am not looking for some kind of error or whatever but rather I am just very curious if any of you experts know what I'm looking at. I took photos of the entire coin as required and I used indirect light on the first 2 pictures and then increased the power and took some more. Kinda looks like that liquid terminator guy rubbed up against it. Thoughts?

I've noticed the same filmy crud on '68 and '69 uncirculated mint set coins. Try soaking the coin in 100% acetone for a day or so.

Also caution, do not soak in direct sunlight nor around UV light.

Generally speaking most nail polish remover with acetone have other additives, which is not beneficial to the coins natural copper (red) patina. Proceed with caution. Thanks, Doug.

PS: Adding the seals on shrink wrap is not a guaranteed seal from day one nor is it after 53 years. Thank, Doug.

An update and a shout out to Halo1st/Doug: I got 3 mint sets from an estate auction. The excact same stuff is on the 1970 penny as well. No other coins effected. The mystery deepens.

that suggests the cent's alloy reacted with the plastic more than the alloy of the other denominations did

Leaving them in the cello that long turned the color on the coin. I got a proof cent that the color was turned a bit more silver in color, but the coin is just a normal one:

Yes, 100% acetone, but just be sure is 100% and not what is marketed 100% acetone and have also denatonium benzoate.
