The 1876 Trade dollar is one of the most difficult dates to determine between a proof and business strike. There were 6 combinations of dies used for the 1876 Trade dollar proofs. Two of the 1876 obverse proof dies were reused for business strikes. This coin is not a proof as the claw holding the arrows is poorly struck. On almost all reverse type 2 proofs, the claw has a strong strike with full details. I purchased the coin at Great Collections. The final price with shipping was $999. This example has both die polish lines and a wipe causing hairlines. When I made the purchase, I knew the coin had hairlines from the GC photos, but I am a sucker for cameo coins. The example has strong eye appeal much better than my photos show. The coin has gold highlights on the details that do not show on photos. This is the fourth Trade dollar that I have purchased for my Trade dollar date and mint set. The set is more difficult to complete than anticipated. The availability on many dates is limited in the lower grades as the coin was never issued for circulation. There are a lot of detail Trade dollars on the market, and the competition for quality straight grades is strong. I considered doing the set raw, but after analyzing the number of detail coins, counterfeits, limited resource material, cost, a raw set was not feasible. Do you think the coin would cross at grade into a PCGS holder?

I feel that is correctly graded by ANACS at MS61 and that there is a slight premium for the small OWH. I also feel that it would cross to a PCGS 61.

Geez I could have sworn this was a proof. Neurons misfiring. Uncommonly pristine surfaces for a business strike.

Tough to say on a crossover. Never hurts to ask, or try! Lots of undergraded coins have shown up in those old ANACS holders over the years.
Nice pick up! Congrats!

Very interesting. I have not looked at enough proof Trade dollars to differentiate between a proof and business strike accurately. I do see the strike weakness on the reverse. Quote: I considered doing the set raw, but after analyzing the number of detail coins, counterfeits, limited resource material, cost, a raw set was not feasible. That is a good idea to reduce the potential of purchasing a counterfeit. Quote: Do you think the coin would cross at grade into a PCGS holder? I personally would not bet on it crossing. There is a chance it would get a detail grade if the hairlines are bad enough, and the grader is in a bad mood that day. I do like the soapbox holder, so I would keep it as is.

Probably best to leave in ANACS holder. TPGs are tough on Trade dollar grading. Here is my ICG MS-62 as a reference.

If not proof, would this Trade dollar be eligible for a PL designation?

Quote:If not proof, would this Trade dollar be eligible for a PL designation? Yes, but the mirrors on the OP example come up a little short to get the PL designation in today's grading standard. I would put the mirrors in the semi-prooflike category. In some of the older holders, Morgan PL examples can be found with mirrors less than 2" clarity, but the coin's would often have a strong cameo. PCGS has graded 3 Trade dollars as PL and NGC has graded 31 Trade dollars as PL. If you every want to get a PL or DMPL designation, send it to NGC.
