Here's another 20-cent piece. This one is graded by PCGS. Would anyone like to match their opinions against the pros?

I'm assuming the scratches are on the slab. Nice coin indeed! MS64. Congrats on that one

Taking in account the scratches are from the slab, I see very slight wear on the right knee, the letter B&E are either lightly struck or worn at the bottom. On the reverse there is very light wear on the top of the right wing, center of the eagles breast and upper part of the left leg. I'm going to say MS-62.

I think the strike on Liberty is universally weak, as are the wing tops on the reverse. I would go with a weak strike rather than wear. The scratches are a bit distracting, but I would go (depending if the scratches are on the coin or the slab) minimally MS63. This is the one of the series I have yet to snag, primarily because of finances. I couldn't dream of owning one in this condition, and heartily congratulate you!

Quote: I see very slight wear on the right knee If that's the case, then you can't have a MS coin. AU58 at best. I see no wear IMO.

I am not good at grading and have never graded this series, but looking at the eagles talons on the left foot appears to be wear, not a weak strike, impossible to tell from photos and I am sure that no third party grading service will grade from photos...but if it is wear MS is ruled out...I would go AU58 as well, if not wear that that would jump it to MS 62 or 63..just MHO...
but I am envious, very very nice coin

A very nice AU55 that would probably bring MS62 money. The top of the eagle's right wing (left in photo) looks worn and unless that's lack of die fill, PCGS could have gone down to AU53.

Those scratches look like they're on the coin...are they?

Thanks for the comments. I bought this coin raw and submitted it to PCGS. They graded it AU-58. The dealer (Northern Nevada Coin) was a bit optimistic and had represented it as MS-61. There is slight wear to Liberty's right knee and some loss of luster in the obverse fields, so the AU-58 grade is I think appropriate. I believe strike weakness is responsible for the soft details on the talon, left (facing) wing, and breast feathers. These details are actually stronger than usual for this date. I selected this example for its superior eye appeal, compared to several AU and low-end MS coins I had considered.
I'll have to check on the scratches; the coin is back in the safe deposit box so I'll report after I have a chance to inspect it. I don't remember seeing those two parallel scratches on the reverse, but I've learned several new things about my coins after taking photos of them. Sometimes the camera catches subtle features that my eyes miss.

I'm with bherring1964 on this one. Although you see a lot of pretty weak strikes with this issue, the coin in question isn't one of them. There's wear (to my eye) in the appropriate places - chest, head, talon and right wing on the reverse, and the knees and head on the obverse. I have to admit, I'm also factoring in what I know of Jaobler's collecting habits - he has the eye for prime examples in a given grade, rather than just buying for the number on the slab. AU55, big strike, and right at the top of the grade.

AU 58
I see wear, so no MS grade from me. Nice Coin though!
