Looking for any information. I have did some research and my best guess would be a 1982 zinc penny that was never plated with copper. Edited by jthumphries247 03/16/2022 07:00 am

@jtg, first welcome to CCF. Second, can you please add a couple pics of this coin to the thread? Also, please give us the weight. Thx.

If it was never plated with copper, it would just be a zinc core. It looks like it has been plated. There have been a few of these showing up lately

So if I used a file and removed some of the " after mint plating" then it should be copper underneath right.

Yes, it appears to have been plated. If so, the plating occurred after leaving the mint; thus, not a mint error--or any error.

You won't find it when searching as it is neither a variety or an error. It is considered damage with no premium. You might find something if you look under plated coins, there are many of them out there.

I would not remove the plating. Keep this as a teaching moment for others. Most of us don't have this coin in this condition. Tag it, save it. Write down what you have learned from this (no money lost)

The best way to see if over plated is to look at the plating bubbles. They are big out of normal with an complete out of the mint material, then is clear. 0.1 correct with add new material.
Other thing: the core Zinc on those coins was never polish. Have luster but it is more dull to the frosted aspect.

Not the best pictures, but that said, this coin looks to be plated. That might explain the extra .1 grams that was added to the coin.
