James B. Longacre had way more style than Gobrecht or Barber, I think. Just an observation.

Many may disagree, but I have to say you are right. Hard to believe these pieces were churned out for 25 years, 1865-1889, albeit in (mostly) low quantities.

Longacre pretty much "owned" the lower denominations of the second half of the 19th century, from the FE and IH cents to the "V" nickels, and everything in between.

I have to give props to Longacre on the liberty double eagle, that is my favorite design. Besides that, I prefer the boring classical designs, although I appreciate the artistic advancements. Too many shields, not enough eagles...

I am having a hard time putting a grade to this coin. Starting with the basics, I can't even deside if this is a proof or business strike. The overall coin looks business but the obverse field is giving me a proof vibe. Athough there is a small amount of strike weakness on the serifs of III. I'll take a jab at MS-65.

i had the same conundrum. PCGS shows 5 times more proofs graded for this year than business strikes. after reviewing other business/proofs I believe the coin is proof

I'm going with PF65+ maybe 66 and bean worthy

I think it's MS-66 but I have a hard time with these though I do love them.

I dont know the series well enough so this is another one thats hard to tell if its proof or not

But i'll go with proof 65
I've been collecting for a couple years... Favorite Coin's are Standing Liberty quarters, Working on my type set | Coffee, Corvettes, Coins & the CCF what could be better?

I'll say MS66 as well and yeah, Longacre had much more style than anything from the Barber shop....

No idea on a proof or MS status but 66 is not unreasonable. Beautiful coin IMO regardless of whatever the holder says.
